Archbishop Oscar Romero
1917 - 1980
Archbishop Oscar Romero died from an assassin's bullet on March 24th 1980, in San Salvador, while celebrating Mass.
From the time of his appointment as archbishop in 1977, Romero spoke out regularly against the growing violence and violations of human rights perpetuated by the armed forces and paramilitary death squads in his country.
The day before he was killed, he directly addressed the country's soldiers in his weekly homily, pleading, "In the name of God, in the name of these suffering people whose cries rise to heaven more loudly each day, I implore you, I order you: Stop the repression".
